Another new portrait.

Another new portrait.

Some new portrait work up on the site. I’ve been looking for a heavy textured canvas background for ages! I finally found it, at Lowes. Cheap as chips and it looks awesome!

Having quiet spells as a freelancer is a funny thing…on the one hand I drive myself insane stressing out about when the next job is going to come through but then again, it always ends up being suppressed by an unquenchable desire to shoot. It’s an itch I’ve got to find a way to scratch and it’s really the only thing that calms my mind. Doing what I love to.
Worry less. Shoot more.

In a continuing effort to shoot more and more portraits I was fortunate enough to have american screenwriter and film director Glen Pitre sit for me. He was a really great guy and great to shoot. Thanks Glen!

Recent portrait. I’m excited about shooting some more later today!

If you didn’t know already, New Orleans just hosted the Superbowl. There was a ton of things going on and one of the first events I shot was Beyoncé during the half-time show press conference. After some initial stress picking up my credentials I was in and found myself a position down front that I was happy shooting from, the rest was fairly easy. The lighting was constant and I just waited for big smiles, interesting expressions and clean shots. Here are just a couple of frames as examples. All shots © Craig Mulcahy/AbacaUSA

Seems like I’m shooting a lot on white recently. Here’s a shot I liked from a shoot last night. As always, working on my tone, colour and contrast. I’ll be posting more from this shoot soon so keep an eye out.

Well, I’ve not updated my tumblr in a while. Thankfully It’s due to me having a string of pretty fun and interesting jobs!
I photographed my first magazine cover which felt like a huge step in the right direction. The image above is the final one selected to grace the cover of New Orleans Magazine and I’m very happy with how it all came out! A huge thanks to fellow photographer Kerry Maloney for assisting me and to all the Doctors I shot for the article, everyone was great!

I used two Alien Bees. One in a beauty dish with a grid the other in a large PLM with the diffusion panal on for a bit of on-axis fill. This combination allowed me to keep the shot somewhat dark but with a subtle spot on the background and still be able to control the shadows with the large modifier.
Here is a quick shot of the finished cover after I went to pick some up from the office.

I recently started working with a large New Orleans based magazine. Check them out here (http://www.myneworleans.com/New-Orleans-Magazine). I’m very excited and happy to be working with them and it feels like a pretty big step for me as I set up here in New Orleans.

Here is the second job I shot for them. An editorial portrait of iSeatz CEO Kenneth Purcell. My brief was to shoot something environmental and naturally lit. They didn’t pick the shot I would have for the article, but I guess that’s something I’m going to have to get used to as I shoot more commissioned editorial work.

I’m just finishing up on a much larger set of pictures for them that will show in the August edition. I’m planning on doing a series of posts looking at the whole process of how I approached the job that might make for an interesting read to some people.
